“This was one of the more collaborative Spark Events that I have attended, and by far my favorite”
Amy Fantalis started by having all the attendees turn on their cameras, a common request today. Not only this, but she proceeded to ask the members to unmute themselves, even if they had nothing to say. This was to open the floor, and break the barrier created by online meetings. It was incredibly effective. This was one of the more collaborative Spark Events that I have attended, and by far my favorite. Today, we often get caught up in the awkwardness of video calls, where no one speaks and everyone sits in an incredibly loud silence. This session was the opposite. Every girl attending had something to say, and everyone was able to interact with one another, something that is unfortunately uncommon over these virtual calls.
We began by listing issues that we thought we wanted to discuss, but as we listed things we wanted to talk about, conversation began to just flow, until soon, questions didn’t need to be asked anymore. Everyone was bright, offered something valuable in every conversation and was encouraged to speak, despite fear of judgement. It was really wonderful to be able to meet new people and actually connect with them over things going on in their lives and mine as well. I would have probably never talked to the girls I met tonight if I hadn’t attended this session, but I’m so glad I did. Not only was it therapeutic but comforting to know that girls like me have the same thoughts and feelings and are able to connect and understand how I’m feeling. Overall, this Spark Event was a 10/10!
